The birth certificate is an authentic
document issued by the Directeur de l'état civil
that prove that the birth occurred in Québec.
Directeur de l’état civil Quebec keeps
a record of all births that occur in Quebec and can
only issue certificates for births that occurred within
the province. Birth certificates are issued using the
information from the original Registration of Birth,
completed at the time of birth. The birth must be registered
with the province in order for the certificate to be
issued.
A birth certificate is a primary identification document,
which means it can be used to obtain other identification.
Birth certificates should therefore be kept in a secure
location, not in a wallet or purse.
