In 2002, the Government of Canada introduced the PR Card to serve as the new identity document for all Canadian Permanent residents. This document is a wallet-size card that contains security features making it difficult to forge. The PR Card is required whenever a Permanent Resident applies for a government program (for example health care, Canadian social insurance card or to enter back in to Canada). The PR Card, however, is not a substitute for a passport. You cannot enter any other country with your PR Card. You must still use your passport and any visas that are required.

1. Do I have to have a Canadian Permanent Resident Card?
Yes, it is mandatory for all Canadian Permanent Residents to present a valid PR Card to personnel before boarding any flight, bus, boat or train returning to Canada and to an immigration officer when you enter Canada.

2. Do I need my PR Card when I travel by car to the US?
Not necessarily. If you are traveling by car, you can still use your landing document. However, if you are entering Canada through a commercial carrier (bus) you will need your PR Card. We recommend that you take your PR Card with you whenever you travel outside of the country.

3. What happens if I change my name?
If you changed your name we recommend that you update your card to reflect your name change, especially if your other ID will bear your new name.

4. I will be immigrating to Canada soon; can I apply for a PR Card?
No. The application process for the PR Card will be done on the day you enter Canada. The officer  in charge of landing you will take care of all of the papers. You will be expected to present a valid Canadian address at that time. If you do not have one, you will have to give one to Citizenship and Immigration Canada within 30 days of your arrival.
