The Citizenship Card, also called a Citizenship Certificate is a document issued by the federal government of Canada that identifies the cardholder as a Canadian citizen. This card can be used to obtain certain documents, such as a passport. It is also used when voting in federal or provincial elections, apply for certain government jobs or apply for social security. It can also be used as an identity document as it contains your full name, picture and signature. The Citizenship Card, however, is not a substitute for a passport. You cannot enter other countries with your Citizenship Card. You must still use your passport and any visas that are required.

WHAT IS THE CANADIAN
CITIZENSHIP CARD?
The Canadian citizenship
card is a wallet-size card that identifies the person
named on it as a Canadian citizen. This document will
be required when you apply for your Canadian passport,
vote in federal or provincial elections, apply for certain
government jobs, or when you apply for a provincial
health card or social
insurance card. Also, the Canadian citizenship
card will allow you to come back into the country whenever
you are returning from a trip. As of 2007, it is still
possible to use your citizenship card to enter the US
by car. However, this is expected to change in 2008.

FAQs
1. Can I travel
with my Canadian citizenship card?
No. Your citizenship card is not a substitute for a
passport. There are, however, some exceptions. As of
October 2007, you can still enter the United States
with your citizenship card as long as you are entering
by car. This rule is expected to change in 2008. You
can use your citizenship card to enter back into Canada
whenever you leave the country.
2. What is the
purpose of the citizenship card?
The citizenship card is an identity document that describes
the person named on the card as a Canadian citizen.
It can be used to apply for government programs only
accessible to Canadian citizens, passports, or vote
in federal or provincial elections.
3. I was born
in Canada. Can I get a Canadian citizenship card?
No. Only citizens who were naturalized or born abroad
to Canadian parents can apply for a citizenship card.
If you were born in Canada, your
birth certificate
will serve as proof of your Canadian citizenship.
4. I just got
married. Do I have to get a new card with my married
name?
You are not obligated to change the name on your card.
However, if you will be adopting your married name in
your ID documents, it is advisable that you also change
the name on the citizenship card.
5. If I need
my card expedited, can it be done?
Yes it can. In order to have it expedited, you must
have a valid reason of urgency.
