British Columbia Vital Statistics keeps
a record of all births that occur in British Columbia
and can only issue certificates for births that occurred
in British Columbia. Birth certificates are issued using
the information from the original Registration of Birth,
completed at the time of birth.
A birth certificate is a primary identification document,
which means it can be used to obtain other identification.
Birth certificates should therefore be kept in a secure
location, not in a wallet or purse.
British Columbia will be using a new birth certificate
as of February 2008. It includes new security features
that will help to prevent identity theft.
This kit is designed to give you key information that
will help you in your birth certificate application
process.
